Hosea 2:3-5

Hosea 2:3-5King James Version (KJV)
3 Lest I strip her naked, and set her as in the day that she was born, and make her as a wilderness, and set her like a dry land, and slay her with thirst.
4 And I will not have mercy upon her children; for they be the children of whoredoms.
5 For their mother hath played the harlot: she that conceived them hath done shamefully: for she said, I will go after my lovers, that give me my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, mine oil and my drink.

3 If she refuses, I will strip her naked
and •leave her bare [expose her] like the day she was born.
I will make her dry like a desert,
like a •land without water [parched land],
and I will kill her with thirst.
4 I will not •take pity [have mercy/compassion] on her children,
because they are the children of •a prostitute [or adultery; harlotry].
5 Their mother has •acted like a prostitute [been unfaithful; committed adultery];
the one who •became pregnant with [conceived] them has acted •disgracefully [shamefully].
She said, ‘I will •chase [seek; go] after my lovers [C the idol-worshiping nations around Israel],
who give me my •food [bread] and water,
wool and flax, •wine [L drinks] and olive oil.’

3 This is a sign of being disrespected but God doing it shows Him putting them into a place of shame. Nakedness often times shows shame but times could show innocents. This is not actually referring to a woman but to Israel. Israel’s nation was born after the times of Joshua; these kings would start years later. Wildernesses bear nothing grow nothing and get very little to no rain which is the cause of that. The wilderness is referring to the land that the people live becoming a wilderness, this could refer t them being taken from the land which would later happen. God would often send drought when the people turned from Him to the gods of the land. Drought often was something that happen which in long term would cause famine because growth does not happen without water.

4 They would soon face a blockade before being taken into captivity, this shows that God had no mercy on them, Judah would not have it as bad and would surrender and be taken into captivity. But their children Israel would result into cannibalism due to hunger. The whoredom is referring to them following many gods instead of their true God.

5 They may have been many reasons that they people turned from God to gods. They may have done it to make relationships with outside nations that would not save them but if they would have returned to God He would have saved them.
