God Forbids Occultism Because it is Dangerous

“Occultism” means involvement in the occult. Occultism is the performing of or taking part in occult practices, and the embracing of occult concepts, which are ideas contrary to the word of God. Beliefs and thoughts are actions, and as actions, they can be right or wrong. They can also be good or evil.

Involvement with the occult is one of the major causes of spiritual oppression in the lives of many people throughout the world. This sin actually puts one in direct contact with demons. Persons involved in the occult may or may not be aware of this or of the danger they are getting themselves into.

The Bible reveals that the occult is of the devil, Satan. He is the father of lies, a murderer and god of this world. He and his army of thousands of demons work to destroy mankind. By feeding us lies he aims to lead us away from the truth of the Scripture that brings us to God’s love, guidance and protection. The lies of the devil have created the numerous false doctrines the majority of the world so eagerly embraces. These doctrines teach beliefs and practices which seek to bring mankind into the occult world and under the subjection of demons. These lies/false doctrines are so easily believed and embraced by human beings because they are convenient for the selfish, lustful and greedy lives they want to live. Truth and guidance can be found in Scripture but the devil works to blind many from this by appealing to the fleshy and evil nature of people in the world. To twist and corrupt God’s truth for the purpose of destroying mankind is the intention of the evil one.

God placed a barrier between the world of man and the occult world and gave us laws to follow so we would not fall victim to the devil and his hosts. A person who practice occultism or involves himself in the occult gives the devil and demons the right of way into his life. This person will therefore be subject to all manner of spiritual oppression, which manifests as mental, emotional and physical sickness which is subsequent to these practices.

Scripture shows that God strictly forbids all forms of occultism:
In Leviticus 19:31, God says,

“Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God.” (Leviticus 19:31)

This verse warns us not to seek aid or guidance from those who make use of spirits because this will ruin us. “Wizard” is another word for sorcerer, magician or anyone who is involved in divination and all other forms of the occult. It is a very dangerous thing for a person to seek guidance and help from these individuals because in doing so, one is turning away from God to trust in supernatural entities and their works. You are supposed to trust only in God, not in humans or worse yet –unclean spirits!

God commands you to put your trust in Him and Him alone. If you trust in anyone or anything else, even your own strength, it brings a curse on you. In chapter seventeen of the book of Jeremiah, the Lord says:

“I will condemn those who turn away from me and put their trust in human beings, in the strength of mortals. He is like a bush in the desert, which grows in the dry wasteland, on salty ground where nothing else grows. Nothing good ever happens to him. But I will bless the person who puts his trust in me. He is like a tree growing near a stream and sending out roots to the water. It is not afraid when hot weather comes, because its leaves stay green; it has no worries when there is no rain; it keeps on bearing fruit.” (Jeremiah 17:5-8 Good News Translation).

How can one trust in human beings, in things, spirits, the principles and forces of nature or other aspects of creation? Nothing existed before God decided to create, and He is our only source of strength. Place all of your trust in God.

When a person places their trust in other things and beings, this sin gives the spirits, which are actually demons, the right of way to come into their life. It should also be kept in mind that spirits want to be consulted so they can mislead people by their lies.

In Leviticus 20:6 God warns people what will happen to them if they seek out and consult those involved in occultism:

“And the soul that turneth after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people.” (Leviticus 20:6)

Deuteronomy 18:9-12 is another scripture which clearly reveals that occult practices are forbidden by God:

“When thou art come into the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, thou shall not learn to do after the abominations of those nations. There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee.” (Deuteronomy 18:9-12)
Ezekiel 13:18 shows that God cursed the women who were involved in occult practices:

“And say, Thus saith the Lord God; Woe to the women that sew pillows to all armholes, and make kerchiefs upon the head of every stature to hunt souls! Will ye hunt the souls of my people, and will ye save the souls alive that come unto you?” (Ezekiel 13:18)
