Rest For Your Soul

“Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” ~ Matthew 11:29

Jesus wants to give you and me rest, and He expects us to “learn” from Him how to enter that rest. So how did He do it? The answer can be found in John 14:10:

“Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works.”

Jesus was completely yoked to the Father, who did all the work for Him! And you are to do just the same. You might be in a situation or circumstance that, in the flesh, is guaranteed to bring stress, exhaustion, pain and loss. But God doesn’t want you to give in or give up. Instead, He wants you to lean into Him, to rest in Him, to TRUST in Him!

“The Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do.” ~ John 5:19

“Whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I speak.” ~ John 12:50

Here’s a good example of what I mean: In the Gospels there’s the story of Jesus asleep in a boat in the middle of a storm. He wasn’t at all panicky or fearful—He was totally calm, composed and confident in the presence of God. He was in “the rest of God” in the midst of the storm that was threatening to destroy the boat and Him. Because He trusted in God, He had nothing to fear. And neither do you, as you trust in Him too!

Prayer for the day:

Thank God for the example that Jesus provides in His complete dependence on God. Pray for calmness, peace, joy and hope as you make the decision to rest completely in Him and in the promises found in His Word!
