How to Be a Good Father
God is interested in the family, which was why He instituted marriage, Genesis 2:24, and gave the command that man should multiply and spread on the surface of the earth even as we have dominion over every other thing that He created. The interests that God has in marriage also affect the aspect of parenting.
For the father who is the head of the family, God wants him to take his position, and ensure that everything in the family goes according to His will and purpose. God gave instructions to Adam, and held him responsible when he fell in the garden even though we can easily conclude that it was Eve that made him to sin.
The same way, any father that fails to play his role well and as a result led other members of the family astray will be queried by God. Eli the Priest died suddenly on the account of his children’s bad behaviors, he refused to warn them despite God’s warning of impending judgment.
The Christians are the light of the world, we are the role models that the world must see, and learn that which is right, whatever God have commanded that must be done, should be seen in the lives of the Christians, that the world may know and learn that it is possible. People must see in our lives and our homes the love of God, and the good results of obeying His words.
What Are The Things That A Christian Father Must Do?
A Father Must Devote Time To The Family Members
A good and caring father must find enough time to be with the family members. Today’s fathers are always very busy chasing money and the material things of this world, believing that all they need to do is to get the best school, the best home, electronics, automobile, and such like for the family members, hence they deny them their presence, forgetting that the bible says what shall it profit a man who gains the whole world and lost his soul, Mark 8:36.
Many children who could not enjoy the companionship of their father turn to television, internet, and all kinds of games for help, and there they learnt all kinds of evil. Giving children attention will help them to build love, confidence, and trust in their parents, and learn God given characters which the parents have built over the years.
A Father Must Communicate Freely With The Family Members
He must listen to the members of the family, especially the children who has a lot of questions to ask, and patiently give them the answers that they need in order to guide them right, a listening father will quickly discern what has been going on behind him, or in the life of any member of the family, and nip the situation in the bud, before it is too late, James 1:19.
You must cultivate friendship with your wife, and children. Let them develop mutual love for you through the caring and the love you show for their welfare. When daddy is not at home, the whole family members should miss him, and not the other way round.
Feel free to discuss issues with your family, recognize and identify with them in their age and developmental situations and relate with them with knowledge.
A Father Must Instill Discipline And Commendation
A good father will not overlook the wrong things that a child has done, and just conclude that he will outgrow the behavior, he will point out the mistake to the child, and punish the child for that, so that such would not be repeated. Children always remember whenever they have been reprimanded, not to do such again.
The correction must be in love, and not in anger, or with a biased attitude, as doing that will only make the child to be hardened. When you correct a child, you can later call the child to show to him that you still love him, but not the wrong things that he has been doing, Colossians 3:21. Is that not the way God relates with us? He loves us despite all our shortcomings, even while we were yet sinners Christ died for us.
Any child corrected like this would not like to disappoint his father; hence such a child would comply with the given instructions. You should also know how to commend good behaviors, do not overlook it, don’t let your child see you as a father who will readily punish but will not say anything when things are done right, or as a father who cannot be satisfied no matter how you tried. Doing that will make the child not to bother do things right as he knows he will not be commended for it.
Provide For The Family
This is very important, and the primary role of the father in the house, it is the duty of the man to provide for every members of the family, your wife is just there as a support, help meet for you, Genesis 2:18, hence you must do this with all diligence. It starts from the area of showing love, to your wife, and then to all your children.
When there is love at home it become difficult for children to accept evil counsels outside, they stick with whatever their parents have told them, come rain, come shine. You will do yourself a lot of good by loving your family members. Let the love translate into providing for their needs, doing this will not make playing your roles to be a burden even when you have to overcome difficulties before you can do so.
Teach And Live The Ways Of God
A good father is not only there as the breadwinner, but he is also the pastor, or the General Overseer of the family. Part of his role is to teach the family members how to fear and obey God. He is responsible for whatever happens in the home, whether he is directly involved or not.
He must lead in prayer, worship, and fellowship with God, and encourage other members to do so. It is easier for children to believe in God when they learn it from their parents, especially their daddy. A good father must teach the family members to trust in God always and not in him.
There is reward for obeying God as a father, you have peace all the days of your life as your children will grow up to become responsible, and God fearing, they will also take care of you in your old age when you cannot care for yourself anymore.
